This chapter gathers together several activities linked to communication and media activities,however, within this group a distinction has tobe made between traditional activities (forexample, postal services) for which growth israther stable and other newer activities (such asmobile telephony and electronic publishing), forwhich growth developments are more marked.

Postal services were the first communications service offered to consumers, allowing them to correspond with relatives,businesses and administration,by way ofletters,postcards andsmall parcels.

With the development of technology, postalservices have progressively had to face increasing competitionfrom new ways of communicating, first of all from thetelephone and telex,then the fax,and now electronic mail and the Internet.
